The Legislative Environment for Civil Society In Africa A Synthesis Report
This paper discusses the legislative environment under which civil society, particularly organized formations, operate in Africa. It examines twelve African countries (Angola, DRC, Ethiopia, Liberia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe), studying civil/state relations, NGO laws and policies, and other legislation affecting NGOs. The research analyzes national constitutions and the political economy of the third sector, with findings indicating that political context shaped the emergence of legal instruments governing civil society.
